Meet Peter Van Tienen, CourseLoop's Managing Director for North America
Peter has a wealth of experience and knowledge in Edtech and he joins us from Canada.
Where are you from?
I was born in a small town (now officially a city) called Pickering, Ontario, Canada. I grew up on a 200 acre farm with livestock and lots of hard work in the summers. When we moved off the farm in my early teens I didn’t realize how much I enjoyed growing up there. I stayed in the Pickering area and raised my two kids with my amazing wife Sue until my kids were grown and on their own. I now live in a small lake side community called Nestleton Station which is about 1.5 hours north east of Toronto.
What is your career background?
I have spent most of my 30+ years in higher education. I spent 11 years in higher education at Seneca College and have worked with companies like Blackboard, The Learning Edge, Pearson and other start-ups in the space. Edtech is definitely my passion.
What made you interested in joining CourseLoop?
The platform approach! I also tend to like EdTech startups. I have done one Aussie to North American company already and we successfully sold that company to Pearson. I like the maturity of the CourseLoop platform, the extensible data model and I have been really impressed with the team!
What outcomes are you excited about seeing CourseLoop achieve over the next 6 months?
I am looking forward to seeing us grow in the north American market from our one current client to several over the coming years. It’s exciting to see institutions join in on the vision.
What do you like to do when you are not at work?
I am an avid boater. We are fortunate to live by the Trent Severn Waterway system. It is a 386 km canal system built in the mid 1800’s for logging that is now a tourist attraction. It is a series of lakes and rivers all connected by a series of locks that are just engineering marvels. It allows us to boat from town to town and explore our beautiful area.
